The unsung heroes of noise control: vent silencers

There are things that most of us wouldn’t give a second thought, but are actually hugely important. For instance, think of the insulation in your house, the plumbing behind your walls, or the electricity grid powering your home. You can add vent silencers to that list.

Vents play a critical role, particularly in large industrial facilities and power plants. Here, they safely release high-pressure steam or gas into the atmosphere, which helps keep the plant running smoothly and safely.

However, the release of these high-pressure gases can generate extremely loud noise. This is harmful to the hearing for plant operatives and disruptive to surrounding environments, affecting both people and wildlife. By helping keep these noise levels to a minimum, vent silencers help maintain a safer and quieter environment in these massive installations.

The science behind our vent silencers

At IAC Acoustics Australia, we specialise in designing vent silencers that reduce the noise produced by the release of high-pressure gases. These are used across various industries, including power generation and industrial manufacturing.

The basic principle behind our silencers is simple: they absorb and dissipate sound energy.  They are designed to specifically reduce sound energy and noise levels while being able to handle the high pressures and flow rates typical of industrial systems.

They are engineered to fit seamlessly into existing setups and reduce noise without compromising the process flow – critical for plant operational safety.

Here’s how it works:

When air or gas passes through a vent, it often travels at high speeds, which creates noise. Our vent silencers use a combination of reactive and absorptive elements to tackle this. Reactive elements change the direction of the airflow, which helps to break up sound waves. Absorptive elements use materials that soak up the sound energy, much like that thick pillow.

Our team uses advanced materials, such as specialised foams and fibres, that are excellent at absorbing sound. We also design the internal structure of our silencers to create a complex path for the air or gas, which further reduces noise by the time it exits the vent.

Our vent silencers in action

One of our proudest achievements is the work we did for AGL Torrens, a large power station in South Australia. This facility needed a solution to reduce the noise from their ventilation systems, which was not only disruptive but also posed a health risk to workers.

We designed and installed custom vent silencers that significantly reduced the noise levels. The project required a deep understanding of the power plant’s particular needs and challenges. For that, we conducted detailed noise assessments and used this data to design silencers that would provide maximum noise reduction without interfering with the plant’s operations.

We installed vent silencers with both reactive and absorptive technology to achieve the desired noise reduction. We also made sure these silencers could withstand the high temperatures and pressures in the power station.

The results were impressive. Not only did the new silencers reduce noise to safe levels, but they also improved the overall working environment.

IAC Acoustics Australia: keeping vent noise to a minimum

Ventilation systems might not be something you think about every day, but they play a crucial role in keeping our environments healthy and safe.

By designing and installing advanced vent silencers, we help various industries control noise and create better working environments. Our work with AGL Torrens is just one example of how we turn complex challenges into successful solutions.
